Inequality Among Equals. The Concept and Phenomenon of Ressentiment

Leonid Fishman

It has been more than a century since Friedrich Nietzsche and Max Sсheler first discussed the phenomenon of ressentiment. But does it truly exist? How does the real and imagined “aristocracy” that accuses social groups challenging its supremacy of ressentiment relate to the current state of affairs? Wouldn’t it be more accurate to move away from the notion of ressentiment and instead discuss the specific social attitudes shaped by one’s societal position, which represent the “perspective that identifies ressentiment”? And if ressentiment does exist, how are its many contemporary manifestations connected to its classic descriptions? What if ressentiment has become an inherent norm in modern societies, and how did this occur? This monograph, aimed at political scientists, sociologists, philosophers, and anyone interested in the transformation of modern society, seeks to answer these and other questions.
