The United States has a two-party system, but few people know that it has been renewed several times over the more than two hundred years of independence in the United States. There are three systems, with different names for the main participants. The Republican Party and the Democratic Party, constant participants in the system since the 1850s, have repeatedly changed their parameters. US historians count five or six or even more national party systems.
