Drama of Memory. Essays on the history of Russian drama

Pavel Rudnev

About the book: The book attempts to provide an overview on the Soviet post-war and post-Soviet dramaturgy from the 1950s to the present, from V. Rozov to I. Vaskovskaya. The author has two tasks: to look at the development of Soviet drama from the point of view of a person at the beginning of the 21st century, it was the time when the Soviet theater canon had no longer power over present theatrical reality and to support the idea of the continuity of the development of modern play in Russia. The researcher challenges the belief in a gap between generations and emphasizes that an artistic and ethical quest of the authors of the Soviet period was not interrupted, continued in the dramaturgy of the most recent period. The book presents the names of famous authors (A. Arbuzov, A. Vampilov, L. Petrushevskaya, V. Erofeev, N. Kolyada, E. Grishkovets, V. Sigarev and others) as well as almost forgotten authors. Some chapters are devoted to the individual phenomena – an industrial play, a “manor drama”, a “new drama”, a documentary theater, etc. P. Rudnev is a theater critic, Ph.D. in Arts, Artistic Director Assistant of the Moscow Chekhov Art Theater and Rector Assistant for special projects of the School-Studio at Moscow Art Theater. Author of the monograph "Theatrical Views of Vasily Rozanov" (2003).
