Leo Simkin
About the book: At the heart of this publication is the supplemented and revised book “An hour and a half of retaliation” (2013), which triggered a broad response. Leo Simkin told for the first time biography of Alexander Pechersky, a Soviet officer, a leader of the revolt in the Nazi death camp Sobibor, created for "final determination of a Jewish case".
The story of the hero is based on the documents collected by the author and memoirs of friends and a family. Yet, there still a lot required clarification: over the past five years, new materials from the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defence were published as well as the new myths on Pechersky were generated. Achievement of the Sobibor revolt leader is now well known. The story about him is supplemented by information based on declassified documents of proceedings about “ordinary soldiers of the genocide” - former Soviet citizens who served as security guards in the death camp. Furthermore, there was developed wide context of the post-war life of Pechersky in Soviet reality where changed the official attitude to the Sobibor prisoners valor.
