Commentary on the novel by Vladimir Nabokov ‘The Gift’

Alexander Dolinin

About the book: A monumental commentary on the longest, complicated and probably the best novel wrote by Vladimir Nabokov in Russian. Alexander Dolinin solved the mysteries and clarified unclarities of „The Gift” since 1989: as a result, the scope of this research was worked out not less than the Nabokov's novel. This is a very meticulous study, equipped with citations and illustrations, addressed not only to specialists. Dolinin presents to the public unexpected Nabokov - a passionate pedant, fallen in love and dedicated to the Russian literature, a contemporary of political and aesthetic discussions of the interwar decades, an ingenious philosopher.

“The Commentary”’s main feature is suited to the needs of an inquisitive audience: Dolinin deliberately is not giving answers to the questions, which are to be removed by thoughtful reading and re-reading. The publication is also equipped with the calendar of ”The Gift” and some additional information: working texts of the period when Nabokov has been dreaming of a novel and started to compose biographies of Nikolai Chernyshevsky and the father of the protagonist, as well as the reason why he chose such names for his characters, first criticism and interpretations of the book.
