Biography: Venedikt Erofeev. The Outsider

Oleg Lekmanov, Mikhail Sverdlov, Ilya Simanovsky

About the book: The first biography of Venedikt Erofeev, author of the poem "Moscow - Petushki". Published for the 80th anniversary of his birth (October 24, 2018). A unique publication, which includes previously unpublished memoirs of friends and a family, as well as rare archive data and the pictures. The character of Venichka is well known for the reader, both a Russian and a foreign one, the same is not true for the author of the poem Moscow - Petushki. Oleg Lekmanov, Mikhail Sverdlov and Ilya Simanovsky - the authors of the first biography of Venedikt Erofeev (1938–1990), based on collected evidence of the contemporaries, documents and memoirs, are trying to sort out fact from fiction, making a portrait of a person seeking complete freedom both in prose and in life. Alongside Venedikt’s life story, a “biography” of Venichka - a detailed analysis of his journey from Moscow to Petushki, is captured in a poem. The book contains unpublished photographs and materials from the personal archives of the family and friends of Venedikt Erofeev. “Venia produced a lot of legends, “desas”and apocrypha about himself, nurtured them and multiplied them. By efforts of apostles, his friends and admirers, these "Gospels of Erofeev" were given wide distribution. I do not envy the one who would dare to create a true, non-mythologized life story of Venedikt Vasilyevich Erofeev. To separate the facts from theatricalization of his life is not easy. Apparently, nobody knows what is true Erofeev till the end.” Anatoly Ivanov “But we will nevertheless try, carefully and avoiding cliches, to propose variety of cautious answers to the question: what “feelings and dreams” were really important for Erofeev?” (Quoted from the book's preface)
