How the Universe Works. Introduction to Modern CosmologySerge Parnovsky
This book is dedicated to cosmology – a science which has recently celebrated its hundredth birthday. It explains why we believe the Universe has a beginning, when and where the Big Bang happened, what is meant by recession of galaxies, how everything around us from atoms to galaxies was created, what the future of Universe is, whether there are worlds with different physical laws, what black holes are, and much more. The book deals in a great detail with what we know and what we do not about the two mysterious entities which together form 95 % of the Universe – dark matter and dark energy. Physical foundations of the General relativity and its predicted effects are discussed as well. The book is intended for a wide range of readers; however some sections, especially those dealing with elements of non-relativistic cosmology, require mathematical knowledge on the level of first-year university courses. That part may be considered a special textbook, where the main cosmological solutions are obtained without the use of mathematics of general relativity.
