Koch, a 17th Century Polar Seafaring Vessel: New Data

Pavel Filin, Evgeny Vershinin, Sergey Kukhterin, Mikhail Naimark

The study of koch vessels, which played a significant role in the colonization of Siberia and the Far East, has a long history. However, the limited number of sources and the lack of verifiable images continue to raise numerous questions regarding their appearance and outfitting. The authors of the book are historians and experts in traditional shipbuilding who have compiled the latest data on koch vessels. This information was gathered through archeological expeditions, archival research, and historical reconstruction. The archeological excavation of the town of Mangazeya at River Taz is of particular interest. A large number of fragments of these vessels were discovered in the permafrost, where they had been previously used for constructing residential and household buildings.
