Architecture Without an Architect: Vernacular Neighborhoods of the World’s CitiesAndrei Ivanov
Few people can speak about eh life of cities with as much warmth, enthusiasm, and excitement as architect and urbanist Andrei Ivanov. In his new book, he uses examples from historical quarters of Western European and post-Soviet cities to discuss the cultural phenomenon of architectural vernacular, which refers to construction that aligns with local traditions but does not involve professional architects. Ivanov contrasts this architectural vernacular with structures that are state-imposed, created by real estate developers, and “handed down.” He discusses the potential loss of this heritage, what remains for us, and ways to preserve it. Moscow: Slovo, 2023.
