This book was originally titled Veiled in White Moiré — in honour of the expensive French silk used to make the famous white cassocks, worn by the popes of the 19th and 20th centuries. The lives of the pontifices were extraordinarily interesting, and the events surrounding them are worthy of the best film adaptations. Every Pope was a person like us.
